Intentional Healing Teaching Storytelling

The firefly spirit symbolizes wonder and illumination. Amidst the darkness, she winks her light of hope and joy. Children and elders can bask in the glow of fireflies through healing storytelling. Parents, extended family, teachers and healers can become just the healing storyteller a child needs. The values of cooperation, cultural understanding, compassion, resilience and peace ripple in a child’s mind like a stone thrown in sparkling water, offering light and nourishment in their growing years and beyond. Elders may transmit the light and wisdom of their life experience through storytelling. Keep reading to learn more about Fireflies.

When children experience personal, cultural, or economic challenges, many families, schools, and organizations do not have the resources to address these stressors. Many of these children never see a therapist or other helping professional. A story can reach these children and be an enjoyable indirect healing and teaching channel for a child.

Elders in our society often feel left out, with their contributions forgotten. They need attention, appreciation and validation of their life experience. Children and youth, in turn, are missing the rich wisdom and the warm and healing vision that elders long to communicate. Fireflies forms a bridge of story between elders and children as elders share their life stories and enrich the lives of children with their wisdom.

Healing storytelling promotes relationship and personal interaction needed in a society infused with social media, phones, commercials, and materialism. Through healing storytelling, adults can pass down tales told by elders in many cultures. They can also create personalized healing stories for children.
